In this season of stewardship renewal when parishes are working to encourage their respective members to re-sign the parish pledge cards it is instructive for us to take a step or two back and look at the spiritual principles which guide our parish finances. And in modern American life, conflicting messages are frequently heard regarding precisely how parishes should be funded. Some parishes have long since converted to the stewardship model with regular, proportional giving. Others still operate off of a dues structure with assessments based on family size. And still others look to fund-raising events, festivals, and a pay-as-you-go model to finance the operation of the parish...
