' Let them praise His name in the dance: let them sing praises unto Him with the timbrel and harp.'
~ Psalms 149:3
The Hellenic Dance Academy was founded in 1975 under the direction of Elaine Kostikos Southall. There were 25 dancers at the time ranging from ages 10-18 years. The group was called the Denver Hellenes. Throughout the years the programs popularity grew. The Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Metropolis Cathedral of Denver is proud to have one of the finest Greek Folk Dance programs in Colorado. Over 150 dancers ranging from kindergarten (age 5) through college age/adults participate in the program. There are five individual groups that represent that number with 10 volunteer instructors.
The mission statement of the Hellenic Dance Academy is:
To instill the tradition of Hellenism and the appreciation of this awesome heritage in the Greek Orthodox youth and young adults through traditional folk dances and costuming from throughout Greece, music, song and fellowship.
The Dance Academy proudly displays a variety of dances and costumes from all parts of Greece. Music, dance, and other artistic expressions reflect the real experience of a culture. Dressed in vibrant costumes, accompanied by authentic music, the Hellenic Dance Academy dancers capture the richness and elegance of traditional Greek folk dancing.
The majority of the performances throughout the city are displayed by the high school and adult groups. Although during the festival, held every year during the third weekend of June, all groups perform. The groups, both past and present, have had the pleasure of displaying our Greek culture throughout the state at such events as the Muscular Dystrophy Association Stride & Ride, the Taste of Colorado, the Jerry Lewis Telethon, the Special Olympics, numerous private parties, elementary, middle & high schools, assisted living residences, nursing homes, local television news & talk shows on all channels as well as competed in a national dance festival in California. The Hellenic Dance Academy of Denver has been featured in the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News as well as other local newspapers. Finally the groups have been part of festivals in neighboring states such as Wyoming & Nebraska.
The Hellenic Dance Academy continues to enhance its dance repertoire in order to continue to entertain and educate audiences about the beauty of Greek dances and traditions, while striving to keep our cultural inheritance alive for future generations.
